UBCO scientists and their collaborators across Canada and around the world are using CHIME to unlock the mysteries of dark energy in the universe, magnetic fields in our Milky Way Galaxy, and fast radio bursts. As of 2020, CHIME has now discovered most of the known fast radio bursts and is providing many clues to help us understand the origin of these enigmatic events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Description Source: Nature (for both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-018-0867-7\">&#8220;Observations&#8230;&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-018-0864-x\">&#8220;A second&#8230;&#8221;<\/a>). Published 2019 (7743).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><br \/>\nAuthors<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Dr Alex S. Hill<\/strong> is an astronomer who joined the faculty at UBC Okanagan in 2019. After completing his PhD in Astronomy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2011, he held research positions at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation\u2019s Australia Telescope National Facility in Sydney, at Haverford College near Philadelphia, and at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory near Penticton, BC. His research focuses on gas and magnetic fields between the stars in the Milky Way galaxy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Dr Tom Landecker<\/strong> holds Adjunct appointments at the University of Calgary (Physics and Astronomy), the University of British Columbia Okanagan (Physics and Engineering), and the University of Sydney (Physics). He was Principal Research Officer in the Radio Astronomy Program of NRC-Herzberg until his retirement in January 2014.
