Some children do this easily, but others have trouble combining the thinking and the talking tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Other current projects focus on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The relationship between children\u2019s language and the problem solving strategies that they use<\/li>\n<li>How children learn to use language to talk about their experiences and tell stories<\/li>\n<li>The importance of language for problem solving and reasoning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<a href=\"#top\">Back to Top<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"kidtasks\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What Will the Appointment(s) Be Like?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We usually ask children to join us in the following types of activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Language activities<\/strong>, including listening to and inventing stories, making sentences using specific words, watching short videos and describing them, and identifying pictures that match vocabulary words<\/li>\n<li><strong>Memory games<\/strong> using words or pictures<\/li>\n<li><strong>Problem-solving activities<\/strong>, including discovering a problem solution or finding better ways to perform a task<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><center><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/clcl\/files\/2020\/02\/games-2801332_1920-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/center><br \/>\nChildren seem to enjoy our activities and find them interesting!<br \/>\nEach project requires one to three visits, each lasting 30 &#8211; 45 minutes. Children are seen either at school, daycare, or preschool, in their homes, or at UBC depending on the project and the parent\u2019s wishes. For some projects, audiotaping or videotaping of activities may be required. We will always inform you of this prior to the project. <strong>We never use children&#8217;s names or any identifying information in publications or reports resulting from our research!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"#top\">Back to Top<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"who\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Who Can Participate?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Most of our research projects involve English speaking preschoolers and school-aged children with and without a history of developmental speech and language difficulties.<br \/>\nIn some case, bilingual children may also be recruited to participate.<br \/>\nOur projects involve children of different ages and backgrounds, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Typically-developing children<\/li>\n<li>Children with delayed language development<\/li>\n<li>Children with reading and learning difficulties<\/li>\n<li>Children with a history of speech and language problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We are always looking for participants! Please contact us to learn more and to add your name to our registry. When a project comes up that might be appropriate for your child, we will contact you with the details.
