work sample 5 (GIS accomplishment statement)

In the GEOB 270 course, we are taught to operate GIS applications (ArcGIS) and to perform GIS analyses. From lab 1 to 3, I learned important concepts and skills through completion of GIS tasks using ArcGIS and ArcCatalog.

  1. Gained basic knowledge of GIS software ArcGIS to display map features, to add data(layers) to map, to manipulate data tables, to create a customized map, and to save the created map to associated data files.
  2. Compared and Contrasted vector and raster data models to understand each model’s associated visualization effects and datasets processing ways.
  3. Solved geographical problems in a given scenario to determine possible danger areas through Geographical Analysis Tools (e.g. proximity, reclassify, convert raster to vector, intersect, clip, select by location).

work sample 4 (Map of Vancouver Tsunami Danger Zone)

Using ArcGIS, I created a map of Vancouver with the tsunami danger zone clearly delineated, the road network affected, the land use areas affected, and the signage layer.

Here is the PDF of my map:   map

Here are a few geographical analyses and explanations:

  • percentage of the City of Vancouver’s total area is in danger:     20314805.889169/131033339.950334 = 15.503%
  • method I use to find the percentage:  Open the Attribute Table of “Vancouver_danger” and “Vancouvermask”  and find the sum areas of each: 20314805.889169,  131033339.950334
  • To create a layer containing the health care and educational facilities within the City of Vancouver danger zone:  1)use the Intersect tool; 2)input features “Vancouver_health” and “Vancouver_danger”; 3)input features “Vancouver_education” and “Vancouver_danger”.
  • Resulting facilities:
