proposed ski resort map

This map demonstrates different areas that might negatively affect the proposed ski resort construction.

The Garibaldi at Squamish project (ski resort) is currently under Environmental Assessment review to assess its potential environmental and economic impacts. As a natural resource planner, my task is to determine the feasibility of building this ski resort and make recommendations to the proponents’ proposal. In order to do so, I analyzed related spatial data, evaluated the issues raised by opponents, and produced this map that includes the influencing features.

Making the map involved obtaining data from DataBC website, categorizing the acquired data, clipping both the vector and raster layers to the project boundary, calculating the percentage of the areas in interest (i.e. old growth forest, ungulate habitat, red-listed ecosystems, fish habitat, area below 600m), creating the complete map that display areas that negatively affect the proposed project.

About Me

Welcome to Clio’s ePortfolio!

I am a second year Geography major student at UBC specializing in Environment and Sustainability with a keen interest in Geographic Information Science and various environmental issues. This blog is created to share my GIS lab projects and other course related writings, representing my geographic understanding of the world tied to issues of environment and sustainability. Throughout the learning experience of Geog211 and Geob270, I have acquired a geographically informed perspective to examine global environmental problems and to operate ArcMap and ArcCatalog (two basic GIS applications) to perform GIS analysis. Specifically, concepts and approaches learned in Geog211 allow me to draw my own conclusions about the current and future trends of the dynamic social and environmental systems. Besides, I have recently worked on a number of GIS projects for Geob270, including reviewing raster landsat data of Mt. St. Helen’s volcanic eruption, identifying tsunami affected danger zone within the City of Vancouver, comparing housing affordability between Vancouver and Toronto, assessing the environmental impact of the proposed Garibaldi at Squamish project. Both fields of study have prepared me with essential spatially and geographically analytical skills, and I am excited to integrate them in future research and career.
