General / Habitat
  • An evergreen semi-shrub (somewhat woody)
  • Common in meadows and scree slopes
  • Subalpine and alpine elevations
Key Identifying Characteristics
  • Form: Growing prostrate or erect, mat-forming, stems often red
  • Leaves: Numerous growing in dense basal tufts, 2-3 times dissected at tip, persistent for many years
  • Flowers: Small, white, borne on crowded terminal cluster on leafy stem
  • Fruit: Follicle containing several seeds
Interesting Characteristics
  • Divided leaves resemble the foot of a partridge, hence the name
