Implications

Many things have changed in education from 100 years ago to now. Indeed many questions have been asked and answered when it comes to a great number of topics concerning combined classrooms. Sir Ken Robinson addresses a few of these topics in the following video. While he does not address combined classrooms directly, I believe that a lot of what this video touches on addresses our education system as a whole.

While I have conducted a fair amount of research on the topic of CC’s my ultimate decision cannot be made until I have spent a number of years in the educational system. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to teach both single-grade and multi-grade classrooms. Again, I cannot say which is a better approach when it comes to the formation of a classroom as both settings contain pros and cons. As I mentioned earlier, the success of a classroom is largely determined on how the school is run by administration and how it is taught by the teacher specifically.

A Word of Advice

Parents should know that it is appropriate to question their child’s teacher on how they run their classroom. Regardless of if it is a single-grade or multi-grade class, ask about the strengths of their particular classroom opposed to another. What are the weaknesses? How do their students benefit from how the class is arranged and how do they struggle? Most importantly, how does the teacher address the struggles of the students who do not do well in the setting they are placed in? With CC’s being a thing of the past as well as the future, I believe there should be no secrets. This topic will stay very relevant to us as parents and teachers for a long time to come.
