1871

A holdover from Prussian law, Paragraph (§) 175, the anti-homosexuality law, enters unified Germany’s law code.

1935

Nazis intensify §175 and §175(a). Supposed infractions against the law are now easier to prosecute for a wider variety of offences.

1949

The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) is founded.

1957

East German courts limit the application of §175. Prosecution should occur only in cases affecting the success of socialism.

1968

§175 is removed from East German law. The age of consent for homosexual acts is also set at 18 years of age.

1973

The Homosexual Interest Community of Berlin (HIB, Homosexuelle Interessengemeinschaft Berlin) is founded.

1984

Lesbians in the Church, a social and activist group, begins commemorations at memorial sites, including the site at the Ravensbrück concentration camp.

June 1989

§151 is abolished. The ages of consent for homosexual and heterosexual acts are equalized.

November 9, 1989

Coming Out premieres at the Kino International.
