“You are the apple of my eye”—–Christmas promotion in China

Christmas is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a widely observed holiday, celebrated generally on December 25 by millions of people around the world. Although most Chinese people are not Christians, Christmas has become an important festival especially among Chinese lovers. Through the merchant’s propaganda, Christmas has ironically become the second Saint Valentine’s Day. Since the pronunciation of apple is similar to that of safety in Mandarin, apples are described as the symbol of “safety” through widespread commercial advertisements. On Christmas day, people tend to give apples to each other to express their care and best wishes. After an apple is dressed up with beautiful decorations, the price may rise from 1 RMB to 20 RMB. At the same time, roses, movies, gifts and candlelight dinners are also a necessity between many lovers to express their love. Of course, merchants are the best beneficiary behind the grand celebration.
