Equality is a term heavily employed in today’s society. Discrimination due to gender, race, or other differences in the home, public, or workplace is prohibited, and North America as a whole is moving towards a culture of acceptance and freedom for all.

This raises the issue of safety concerning Iowa State’s decision to allow legally or completely blind citizens to carry guns in public. State law permits all citizens to carry firearms. This apparently includes those who cannot even see clearly enough to fill out the paperwork required to obtain the permit, which, while technically fair, is a subject of huge concern for the citizens of Iowa. How will firearms serve those who cannot see clearly enough to aim? The safety issues are obvious; the alternative limitation is debatable. Is it just to prevent the visually impaired from exercising their rights and freedoms as citizens of the state of Iowa? Personally, I would argue that any one individual’s rights should not impede those of others. The dangers presented by blind people carrying guns in public outweigh the importance of maintaining equality.

Ultimately, the decision comes to choosing between what rights to protect: the right to a discrimination-free environment or a safe one.
