Office Hours on October 11: Rescheduled to 1-2 pm

I have a mandatory meeting with the Dean’s Office on the morning of Wednesday, October 11, that conflicts with my regular office hours. So for this week only, my Wednesday office hours will be rescheduled to 1:00-2:00 pm in HA 577.

As always, if this time does not work for you, please email me to schedule an appointment at another time.

Grading Guidelines for Stakeholder Engagement Analysis

In class on Wednesday, I outlined the grading guidelines I will be using for the Stakeholder Engagement Analysis assignment. I have also posted these with the assignment outline, if you wish to refer to them before you submit your assignment on Sunday.

Please remember to double-check your assignment against the Written Assignment Standards in the outline. You have some flexibility to slightly exceed the page limits, but you must carefully follow all other standards.

I look forward to reading your work.

Stakeholder Engagement Analysis – Assignment Outline and adjusted due date

I have finally posted the Stakeholder Engagement Analysis – Assignment Outline for your review.

Because of the delay in posting the assignment outline, I have extended the due date for this assignment by one week. It will be due by 6 pm on Sunday, October 8 (instead of October 1). Please note that the revised due date falls on the Thanksgiving long weekend, so I encourage you to push ahead with the assignment as early as possible in case Thanksgiving is a busy time for you.

The first step in the assignment is to let me know whether you will be completing it on your own or with a partner. Please register your choice by Wednesday, September 20, through the Connect link.

The Course Outline has been updated to reflect these date changes.

Impact Investing – student opportunity

If you were interested in the impact investing opportunity with the 10th Avenue Fund that Steve Petterson, BCom Finance alumnus, told us about in class on Wednesday, you can download the overview that he provided and/or visit the Helder Ventures website.

Slides posted for first class

I have posted the class slides for tomorrow’s class, in case you wish to print them in advance. Since we will be following Sauder’s recommended “lids down” policy in this course, you will not be able to refer to the slides online during class time.

I look forward to starting the term with you tomorrow!

Welcome to Strategic Public Relations

I am excited to welcome you to this brand new course, which I believe has been long-overdue at Sauder and UBC.

COMM 386R Public Relations fills an important gap in our current Marketing option, complements a range of BCom options from Finance to OBHR, and supports Sauder’s efforts to enhance its connections to other faculties and to industry through the exploration of interdisciplinary opportunities in this field.

Public relations is all about relationships with publics. This seems like an obvious statement, right? But if you think deeply about what the concept of “relationships” really means – especially healthy, productive, mutually beneficial, socially responsible relationships – that so-called obvious statement becomes highly complex and significant. Ultimately, nothing gets accomplished in the long run without strong, positive relationships.

This course will focus on strategic public relations, which means a bigger-picture approach to developing and managing relationships that is universally applicable in both business and non-business contexts. While we will touch on some of the tactical components of public relations in our discussions of these higher-level strategies, this course will not provide detailed guidance on tactics like writing press releases or developing Twitter/Facebook/YouTube campaigns. (I would be happy to direct you to the courses that would be helpful in those areas, if you wish.)

Through a variety of readings, lectures, discussions, guest speakers, exercises, and assignments, we will explore topics like trust and reputation management, stakeholder and community engagement, issues and crisis management, corporate communications, and events and marketing public relations.

Since we have so much to cover in our time together, we will move quickly – starting with our very first class! Before we meet next week, please carefully review the Course Outline, purchase and download the small course package of readings (the rest of the readings in the course will be freely available online and via Connect), and complete the Prep for Sep 6: Introduction to the Course – Public Relations.

I have spent the majority of my marketing career in public relations roles, and I am excited to share this dynamic world with you!
