Prep for Oct 11: Media Relations
Before class, please:
- Read “Media Relations: Still Important” (Marian Salzman, Forbes.com, June 3, 2016). Consider: From where do you source your news each day? How do you think organizations engage with those media?
- Scan your personal media sources for a positive story about a company (i.e. favourable toward the company) in which a company representative is quoted. Print a copy of the article to bring to class, as we will use it for an exercise. Carefully read the article and identify the following:
- Is the author affiliated with any news cooperatives/syndicates (e.g. Canadian Press (CP), The Associated Press (AP), Bloomberg News, Dow Jones Newswires, Reuters, etc.)? If so, try googling the article title to get a sense of how many media outlets ran the story.
- What is newsworthy in the article, especially from the perspective of the media outlet that published the story? What seems to be the point of the article?
- Does the article seem to cover the company news in a neutral way, or does it seem biased in some way?
- Read “Media Relations 101: Five Tips for Pitching the Media” (Meghan Paton, Futurpreneur.ca, June 25, 2015).
- Complete the short Prep Quiz for Oct 11: Media Relations based on the assigned readings for this class. This quiz will close at 11:30 am on Wednesday, October 11, so be sure to catch this deadline.
