Prep for Sep 18: Corporate Responsibility and Citizenship; Ethics

Before class, please:
  1. Read the Canadian Public Relations Society’s Code of Professional Standards and the Public Relations Society of America’s Code of Ethics. Consider: how are they similar, and how are they different?
  2. Read the following sections from within the PRSA’s and Ethisphere’s “Guide to Increasing Collaboration Between the Communications and Ethics Offices“:
    • Who Are You Really?” (Brian Goldner, President & CEO, Hasbro Inc.) – pp. 7-9
    • Value of Ethics Communication in Business Relationships” (Ben Boyd, Global Chairman, Corporate Practice, Edelman) – pp. 32-34
    • Building Trust in Business” (Richard Edelman, President & CEO, Edelman) – pp. 39-41
  3. Think of one ethical dilemma in public relations that you are not sure how to handle, and be prepared to discuss this in class.
  4. Complete the short Prep Quiz for Sep 18: Corporate Responsibility; Ethics based on the assigned readings for this class. This quiz will close at 11:30 am on Monday, September 18, so be sure to catch this deadline. You will have just one attempt to complete each Prep Quiz, so you are encouraged to complete your readings before attempting them.

  • Listen to (or read the online transcript of) the Under the Influence podcast, “The Elephant in the Room: Human Marketing vs. Profit” (Terry O’Reilly, March 2, 2017). Consider: What are the most effective approaches to handling sensitive or controversial issues?
