I. PREPARATION
Before class, please prepare the following:
- If you have not already done so, carefully review the course outline.
- Read the article, “Social Entrepreneurship: The Case for Definition” (Roger L. Martin & Sally Osberg, The Stanford Social Innovation Review, Spring 2007), which can be accessed via the Library Online Course Reserves on Canvas. Consider: how would you define social entrepreneurship?
- Browse Forbes‘ list of 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs in North America for 2022. You can also browse the list of 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneurs for Europe. Find one that interests you, and figure out what draws you to it. Do you think they all meet the definition of ‘social entrepreneur’ proposed by Martin and Osberg? We will discuss this in class.
- Please read the article, “181 Top CEOs Have Realized Companies Need a Purpose Beyond Profit”, Harvard Business Review, August 20 2019. (Please Note: HBR articles are best accessed through the UBC Library Database. Alternatively, they can also be accessed through the Library Course Reserves via Canvas.)
- Please read the article, “What companies are for”, The Economist, August 24, 2019. (Please Note: The Economist articles can be accessed through the Library Course Reserves via Canvas. Alternatively all articles can be accessed through the UBC Library Database.)
- Complete the Pre-assessment for Sept 12: Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship by 9am on the day of the class. The pre-assessments can be found under “Assignments” on Canvas. (Note: correct answers will be released after the start of class.)
