Class 3 Sept 14: Defining Social Problems & Assessing Opportunities 1

I. PREPARATION

Before class, please prepare the following:

  1. Read the article, “A New Framework to Better Understand Social Entrepreneurship” (Devex.com, October 14, 2015). Consider: Does Martin & Osberg’s process model for equilibrium change make sense to you? (Note: You do not need to watch the video on that same page; it’s on a different topic from the article.)
  2. Read Chapter 6: Grameen Veolia Water in the book, Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism that Serves Humanity’s Most Pressing Needs (Muhammad Yunus, 2010). This resource is available in e-book form via the UBC Library website or the Library Course Reserves for this course, via Canvas. Consider: Why did it take so long to fully understand the situation in Bangladesh?
  3. Read Dilemmas in a General Theory of Planning (Rittel & Webber, 1973), focussing on pp 158 (Problem Definition) to 167.  (This reading is available on the Library Course Reserves, via Canvas.) Generally consider: What is a “wicked problem” and please come prepared to discuss.
  4. Complete the Defining Problems & Opportunities 1 Pre-assessment on Canvas.
