I. PREPARATION
Before class please prepare the following:
There is no pre-assessment for this class, but before you begin the assigned readings, please note: instead of a pre-assessment quiz, please prepare some detailed notes on the pros and cons of social entrepreneurship as a force for positive, systemic social change in the areas of the world’s most pressing problems. We will hold some form of a “debate” in class, and you will need to be prepared to argue either side. All students should be prepared to participate. We will be calling on students who have not participated very much in class discussion so far this year. It is a good idea to take diligent notes as you complete the readings, as this will save you from having to go back later.
- Read the article: “The Unfinished Social Entrepreneur” (Lewis, SSIR, 2017)
- Read the article: “Can Social Enterprises Really Solve Poverty?” (Koh, Forbes, 2016)
- Read the article: “The Ethics of Innovation” (Chris Fabian & Robert Fabricant, Stanford Social Innovation Review, August 5, 2014).
- Consider: what ethical insights from start-up technology fields can translate to social entrepreneurship?
- Watch the video, “The Dark Side of Social Enterprises” (Tina Dacin, Queen’s University, December 16, 2013).
- Consider: when does it make sense for social enterprise to be used to tackle social problems? Are there contexts in which it definitely does not make sense?
- Review the Critical Thinking Skills Cheat Sheet (Global Digital Citizen, 2016)
- At least look at all the meme variations but feel free to skim the text in: the evolution of an accidental meme (Craig Froehle, 2015)
