Class 4 Sept 18: Social Enterprise Business Models 1 + Funding Social Ventures 1

I. PREPARATION

Before class, please prepare the following:

1. Read Chapter 3: Launching a Social Business in the book, Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism that Serves Humanity’s Most Pressing Needs (Muhammad Yunus, 2010). This resource is available in e-book form via the UBC Library website.
   • Consider: What are some ways that social entrepreneurs can test their business models?
2. Watch these short videos:
   • “Business Model Canvas Explained” (Strategyzer, September 1, 2011)
   • “Visualizing your Business Model” (Strategyzer, September 20, 2013)
3. Browse through as much or as little as you like of the online editions of Value Proposition Design (Strategyzer, 2015); find something that you think is interesting, new, or possibly funny, or controversial.
4. Complete the Business Models 1/Funding 1 Pre-assessment on Canvas.
5. We are fortunate to have Sean Condon , Director Social + Economic Innovation, Vancity Community Foundation join us a guest speaker on Monday.  Please arrive in class on time and be prepared to ask questions.
