Flu: A New Season Coming this Fall

Nowadays, influenza virus commonly know as the flu is treated relatively as minor illness. However, knowing that flu pandemics have caused death of millions of people in the past ,  people should be more cautious, specially those at a higher risk: children, pregnant woman, the elderly. Additionally, influenza infections can be prevented by annual vaccination.

What is Influenza?

Influenza is a disease caused by influenza viruses that infect the respiratory system of many animals, birds and humans. In humans, some of the symptoms that characterize these infections are cough, fever, runny nose, sore throat and headache. Interestingly, these symptoms usually appear two or three days after infection and typically do not last more than a week. The three types of influenza virus, include: A, B and C; where influenza A and B  viruses usually infect a large numbers of individuals within a population at the same time.

History of Influenza virus

An influenza pandemic occurs because of antigenic shift,  a process in which two or more viruses combine together to form a new subtype of influenza virus that spreads worldwide. Through history, influenza A viruses are responsible for all the pandemics that have occurred and they represent the greatest threat to the population. For example, the deadliest flu pandemic is the Spanish flu, it took place in 1918, causing between 40 and 100 million deaths worldwide. In 1918, there were no vaccines available against influenza, neither were there antibiotics to treat secondary infections associated with influenza infection.  According to the article published by Peter Palese, influenza viruses type A and B are responsible for the death of approximately  50,000 people in the U. S. every year.

Why is the influenza virus a threat to people?

According to the article published by Declan Butler,  vaccines are required to be developed each year because some regions of the outer proteins of influenza virus can undergo high mutation rates during replication. This explains why influenza viruses avoid detection by the immune system. When a person gets infected with the flu, their immune system will mount responses  based on the first encounter the person had with the virus, so the response in a second or third encounter will be stronger and it will be against the unchanged regions of the virus. However, because the virus has changed structurally the antibodies against the previous version of the virus will not be of much help.

What is the best solution?

Development of new vaccines every year that best match the strains predicted for the incoming influenza season. Flu vaccines are able to reduce the risk of serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization or even death. While the efficacy of annual flu vaccinations were not very high for the 2017-2018 flu season: 17% in Canada, 10% in Australia and 25% in the U.S.,  but they are better than nothing.

What are stem cells?

Stem cells are your body’s internal repair system and seemingly remember past injuries of tissues by retaining memories of old injuries for improvement of  healing in the future. Studies have indicated that stem cells also have behavioral roles of responding to the environment and sensing it.

As living beings, there are times we encounter various kinds of injuries through some traumatic events. These can be simple from paper cuts to serious injuries like the loss of limbs infarction. The body has a mechanism of healing these damaged tissues. Some organisms like earthworms have the ability of regrowth of complete body parts after an injury but human beings have no such ability. Stem cells are known to replenish such types of injuries by focusing on the healing of other cell types.

How can stem cells repair injuries?

In the healing context, repair refers to restoring tissue function and architecture after an injury. This is based on the processes of replacement and regeneration. Research has indicated that these stem cells also have the ability of remembering past inflammation and wounds. The suggestion from studies of the gut, airways and the skin is that together with the immune system, stem cells use the memories for the improvement of tissue responses to later assaults by pathogens which are bacteriums, viruses that can cause disease.

The repair of tissues can lead to restoration of some of the original structures of the tissue damaged like epithelial layers but in complex healing of organ functions. Additionally, when the responses of the stem cells fail to go in the right way, they can lead to various enduring health problems based on chronic inflammation. It thus means that stem cells directly communicate with the immune system to facilitate healing but the stem cells have a central role of making tissues adapt to preservation.

Signs of a super-Earth discovered around Barnard’s star

 

Where is Barnard’s Star? What is Super-Earth?

On November 14th, 2018, astronomers claimed that a super-Earth named Barnard’s star b was discovered in one of the orbitals of Barnard’s star which is a red dwarf star. This indicates that Barnard’s star is faint and has a low mass. It is approximately six light-years away from the solar system, and it is the second closest to the Sun. A super-Earth is an extrasolar planet which has a larger mass than Earth: Barnard’s star b is 3.2 times heavier than Earth and lies in the snow region where liquid water barely exists.

Why Is this finding important?  

The method used to detect Barnard’s star b is called the radial velocity method. It detects the wobbles in a star which are likely to be caused by the gravitational pull of an orbiting planet. This is because wobbles affect the light coming from the star: as it moves towards the Earth, its spectrum appears slightly shifted towards blue, and as it moves away, it is shifted to the red.

The discovery of the planet is vital because it is the first time using this technology to detect a planet having such a small size and such a long distance from its host star. This newly applied radial velocity method adds extraordinary accuracy for identification of a planet. According to Dr. Ignasi Ribas, the research team is over 99% confident that the plant does exist. In the future, however, further data collection is still needed to minimize uncertainties. In addition, the technology is useful and easy to directly observe similar planets and obtain vital info such as the properties of the planets to extend current understanding.

Why do we keep searching for new planets? 

Due to the explosive growth of population, we are facing the problem brought by the limitation of resource on Earth. Astronomers keep searching for new planets that are Earth-like in the hope of obtaining the signs of liquid water. Moreover, we are all curious about the answer to the question which states “Are we closer to not being alone”.

New tracking system could show-at last- how pesticides are harming bee colonies

We see the use of insecticides all around the world because it is something that is necessary for our own population. Insecticides is something that we depend on for the survival of our crops. However, as much as humanity may need them, not all of them are beneficial for the world. There is one type of insecticide that harms the important bee pollinators – the neonicotinoids. At high doses, the chemicals that make up insecticides can enter the pollen and nectar of flowers and harm bees’ memory, which consequently affect the bees’ ability to harvest nectar.

To further investigate how this happens, researchers have come up with a tracking technique that makes note of how neonicotinoids reduce and affect the activity of bees. Previous research studied the damaging effects of neonicotinoids on the environment as a whole, but most of them did not extend towards how pesticides could specifically harm bee colonies.

To see how pesticides were affecting bee colonies, James Crall, an animal behaviour biologist at Harvard University, glued small tags to the backs of bees from approximately a dozen colonies. He then used tracking software to capture their movements as they were given sugar syrup coated with a small amount of a common neonicotinoid called an imidacloprid. As a result, the bees’ activity level, including their social interactions, decreased as the bees cared less about their brood.

This was a notable finding as collectivism and working for the brood is integral to the survival of a bee colony. Crall also noted that the bees’ level of lethargy increased during the night and that their abilities to regulate temperature also hindered. Despite the potential benefits that insecticides may bring to our agriculture, they are undoubtedly harmful for some of our species, including the bees.

As such, the question arises as to whether our need for pesticides is greater than our need for our natural pollinators, which is something that cannot be answered so easily.

The Americanization of Gut Bacteria in Immigrants

When immigrating to America everything becomes westernized, including the bacteria in your gut.

Previous studies showed that living in the United states increase the risk of obesity and chronic disease among immigrants to the US relative to those who stayed in their country of birth. Researchers from the University of Minnesota, Dan Knights and Pajau Vangay, thinks that this increase in obesity and chronic diseases may be caused by the decrease in biodiversity in the gut of immigrants.

People in developing countries have more diverse microbiomes, while people living in industrialized countries like the United States have lower microbiome diversity. However the study found that when moving from a developing country to an industrialized nation would actually cause the biodiversity of the gut bacteria to decrease.

The Effect of Immigration on Gut Bacteria

The study focused on the Hmong and the Karen who are the most at risk for Obesity in Asian populations in Minnesota. The study studied the immigrants of different residency length and second generation immigrants and compared the biodiversity of the gut bacteria in these populations.

When immigrants move to the United States, their gut microbiome rapidly Americanizes within 6 to 9 months and becomes less diverse. The gut is invaded by with a rise in the population of bacteria of the genus Bacteroides which is associated with an American diet, while replacing the hey began to replace those of the genus Prevotella from the immigrants home countries diet.

When studying immigrants who have been in the US for years, they found the bacteria in the gut has become less diverse also the American genus Bacteroides have become more prevalent. The change of Bacteria is a long process and it starts immediately but it continues for many decades after and  those who have immigrated longer much more at risk for obesity and other chronic diseases.

Bacteria Diversity Change with Long Term effects

The researchers also observed the second generation immigrant who have very similar diet as their parents with ten times the amount of rice as the average American. However even with a different diet the diversity of gut microbiome in these second generation immigrants very closely resemble the average American. Meaning the decrease in gut bacteria diversity does not only compound over time but across generations.

Know this decrease in gut bacteria diversity increases obesity and chronic illnesses, maybe it is worthwhile to find how to maintain or increase gut bacteria diversity to maybe help fight obesity and chronic illnesses.

Virtual Reality as Therapy for Mental Disorders

While many of us have heard of virtual reality (VR), we are likely less familiar with its applications. While VR can be an immersive gaming experience, it can also be used to confront your biggest psychological fears. In fact, some psychologists currently use this technology as treatment for patients with psychotic disorders and paranoid ideations. People with paranoid ideations believe they are being harassed and are suspicious of other people’s motives. As of 2013, more than 6.7 million people in Canada were living with mental conditions and Canadians with bipolar disorder and Schizophrenia, which both involve paranoia, each made up 1% of the population.

What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality creates the illusion of reality within different scenarios. The VR program is set up through a computer system, to which headphones and glasses are often attached. The recreated sights and sounds allow total immersion into the environment being experienced.

Virtual reality as therapy

People with psychotic disorders often have similar responses to social interactions. Specifically, public settings and social activities tend to be avoided and time spent alone is higher than for an average person. One approach to treating patients and helping them reduce their social anxieties is through exposure. While therapeutic exposure-treatments are widely used, they present limitations for psychologists. Specifically, the therapist does not have control over the environment in which the patient is placed, which includes other peoples’ responses. Another difficulty is the willingness of a patient to undergo exposure to their fears in the real world. Virtual reality allows therapists to use exposure-treatments in a more controlled setting and therefore overcoming these limitations.

The effects of VR-assisted therapy were further explored in a study published in March 2018, which was conducted at seven Dutch mental health centres. The study consisted of outpatients between the ages of 18-65, who had been diagnosed with psychotic disorders and paranoid ideation, being randomly assigned to one of two groups: a control group (traditional therapy treatment) or VR-CBT (traditional therapy treatment with addition of VR). Patients within the VR-CBT group attended 16, one-hour VR-therapy sessions and were subjected to experiences such as busy streets, buses, cafés, and supermarkets. As mentioned earlier, the advantage to this treatment is the range of control that the therapist obtains. In this study, the number of human avatars in proximity to the patient, their sex and ethnicity and their responses to the patient, such as eye contact or hostile behaviour were all controlled by the therapist. The study found that momentary paranoid ideation and momentary anxiety were both decreased in patients. Their trigger-response behaviour was also reduced in the VR group compared to the control.

A Decrease of 0.5°C Makes A Big Difference to the World

Three years ago, 195 nations promised to restrain the emissions of greenhouse gas so that the global warming could be limited to 2°C. This year, however, scientists found that 2°C was absolutely not enough, and a target of 1.5°C should be settled.

According to the “New Climate Report” which was released on October 7th by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC), a decrease from 2 degrees to 1.5 degrees Celsius changes the world to a great extent. If the goal is achieved by 2100, there will be a significant decrease in heat, drought and sea level rise. Hopefully, there will be fewer loss of species. There are two reasons why scientists published this report: Warning policymakers and calling for a lower warming target.

The failure of achieving the goal suggested in the “New Climate Report” will affect our daily life. The knotty problem we are facing right now is the increasing number of disasters brought by extreme weather. For example, in February 2018, Vancouver experienced severe snowstorms which caused paralyzed traffic and huge economic loss of the city. These snowstorms occurred due to the La Nina Effect ­– The melting sea ice in the Arctic brought icy waters into the Pacific Ocean and forced the coastal areas to have colder winters than they were before. This also increases the overall sea level and is threatening the existence of island countries such as the Republic of Maldives. In addition, stronger and more intense hurricanes have been attacking the US in recent years. What will be worse, however, is that such climate changes will continue and the weather will become more and more extreme.

How do we achieve the goal and what are the difficulties? 

It will take approximately 30 years to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases to zero and reach a balance (between emissions and reductions). Therefore, “negative emissions” which means carbon dioxide removal must be applied to reverse the greenhouse effect.

However, such a reversing process is not straightforward. According to Hausfather, the linear relationship between increasing temperature and carbon dioxide may break if people start removing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Therefore, the scientists from IPPC believed that people must take actions before the climate become even worse and published “Global Warming of 1.5°C” in the hope of changing policymakers’ minds to settle the target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C instead of 2°C.
