What you can put in your own personal compost and what you can put in your municipal kitchen waste are two different things. If you have a compost box in your back yard DON’T put bread, grains, corn, meat products or anything that will attract unwelcome visitors (RATS!), but all these things can all go into your kitchen waste scrap bag.
Municipalities differ in what they will accept but generally DON’T put the following in your kitchen waste:
- Yard or garden waste
- Plastic or plastic lined paper products
- Pet waste and litter
- Styrofoam
- Sanitary products and diapers
Here are some examples of kitchen waste program where you can check what is acceptable. If your municipality is not listed you can easily google their website for particulars.
