The pictures below are from a Science 8 class on my practicum where I demonstrated the dissection of a cow heart and a sheep pluck. The unit we were learning about was the circulatory and respiratory systems, and the students were familiar with the structures of these systems. I had students gather around while I pointed out and discussed the structures we had learned about. As I walked them through the parts, I asked and answered questions in order to promote critical thought and assess students’ understanding. I found this lesson to be valuable because students were able to see what these structures really look like rather than referring to a diagram. The excitement students showed and the thoughtful questions they asked showed that they were engaged.
