Science 9 – Atomic Theory Lesson 2
Purpose: This lesson will familiarize students with the modern atomic theory of matter and introduce important vocabulary for using the periodic table.
PLOs:
C1 use modern atomic theory to describe the structure and components of atoms and molecules.
C3 write and interpret chemical symbols of elements and formulae of ionic compounds.
SWBAT:
- define emission spectrum, shells, atomic number, mass number, ion, negative ion, positive ion, and ion charge
- describe the modern atomic theory of matter
- write standard atomic notation for atoms and ions
- determine the number of shells for the first 20 elements
Materials: Notes, 6 sets of element hint cards, atomic theory drawing worksheet

Model role play activity by describing Marie Curie’s discoveries of polonium and radium. | Role play: pretend they are a scientist we discussed last class, and they just made their big discovery. Tell a partner what it is, how it changed our view of atoms, and why it was important. | 10 min |
Direct Instruction:
Teacher Activity | Student Activity | Time |
Going through overhead notes- Emission spectra
– Bohr’s revisions to atomic theory – Number of shells in an element – Modern atomic theory of matter – Standard atomic notation |
Filling out skeleton notes. | 20 min |
Activity:

Post cards with description of first 20 elements around the room. Hand out 1 hint card of each element to each student and tell them to place their cards face down in front of the elements. As students are doing activity, ask individual students why they placed cards with particular elements to assess understanding. | Element scavenger hunt: match cards with hint about an element with the first 20 elements posted around the room. | 15 min |
Pick a few elements and discuss the cards students placed there with the class. Why does the card belong or not belong there? | Answering discussion questions. | 10 min |
Hand out sheets. Walk around asking students about their drawings. Encourage students to get creative (e.g. use colour, draw faces on atoms) | Given sheet with each point of the modern atomic theory. Draw a picture to illustrate each point. | Remainder of class, leaving time for conclusion. |

Hand out slips of paper. Tell them it is ok if not all the points are right and to put a question mark next to any they are unsure about. | Exit slip: without looking at any notes, write down as many points from the atomic theory that they can remember. | 3-5 min. |
