Human Body Systems Lesson 1

Science 8 – Human Body Systems Lesson 1

Purpose: This lesson will introduce students to the concept of systems and the levels of organization of human body systems as a precursor to learning about the human body.

PLOs:

B1 demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of living things

B3 explain the relationship between cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems

SWBAT:

  • describe general characteristics of systems
  • name the different systems of the human body and their general function
  • define tissue, organ, and organ system
  • name and describe the four major tissue types: muscle, nerve, connective, and epithelial

Materials: Plastic human body model, skeleton notes, and drawing worksheet.

Hook:

Student Activity Teacher Activity Time
Write down the things that the human body must do in order to function. Also write down the body part they think is responsible for that role. When students are finished, discuss what they came up with. Ask students what they wrote and where they learned it from. 3-5 min

Direct Instruction:

Student Activity Teacher Activity Time
Filling out skeleton notes. Using the plastic model of the human body, describe each system while showing students what it looks like and where it is located. 15-20 min

Activity:

Write and draw an analogy for each of the systems. (e.g. an ice cream truck for the circulatory system or a police officer for the immune system). Worksheet is due next class. Hand out worksheet with names and descriptions of the systems in the human body. Encourage students to make creative analogies rather than literal drawings of the systems and to use colour. Walk around checking students’ work to ensure they understand the activity. 20-30 min
Describe each of their analogies to a partner who will try to guess which system it represents. Tell students to describe their analogy without naming the system or showing their partner the picture. They should switch roles after each analogy. 10-15 min

Independent Work:

Page 63 text book questions: 1-13 or workbook pages 20-25. Walking around helping students. Remaining class time, leaving enough time for conclusion.

Conclusion:

Exit slip: Write down what they think is the most important concept they learned about this lesson. Also write something they would like to know about the human body. Collect and read exit slips. Answer some interesting questions next class. 3-5 min
