Science 8 – Immune System Lesson 5
Purpose: This lesson will help students understand virus transmission and evaluate student understanding of the immune system.
PLOs:
B4 explain the functioning of the immune system, and the roles of the primary, secondary, and tertiary defence systems
SWBAT:
- describe how pathogens are transmitted
Materials: safety glasses, 60 50 mL beakers, 0.1 M NaOH, phenolphthalein, immune system test
Activities:
Student Activity | Teacher Activity | Time |
Virus transmission activity. Once everyone has beakers, students exchange one of their beakers with someone near them. The other beaker remains untouched until the end of the activity. Students write down who they exchanged with every time. After everyone has exchanged with someone, students get up and exchange with someone a few rows away on the same side of the room. Then, students exchange with someone on the opposite side of the room. | Ask students about methods of virus transmission. How is the ebola virus transmitted? Emphasize that some diseases can be transmitted by being in the same room but others require the exchange of body fluids. Have students get a pair of beakers one row at a time then sit down. Tell students when to exchange and with whom. After students have finished exchanging, walk around room putting a drop of phenolphthalein in each beaker that was mixed. | 10 min |
Students brainstorm in groups of 4 with neighbours how they can figure out who was originally infected. | Monitor student discussions and ask guiding questions if groups are stuck. | 5 min |
Share ideas with class for how to find out who was originally infected. | Facilitate class discussion to try to solve who was originally infected. | 10 min |
Watch unmixed beakers get tested to see if they were correct about who was originally infected. | Put a drop of phenolphthalein into each unmixed beaker to show students who was originally infected. | 5 min |
Immune system test. | Monitor during test. | 30 min |
