Module 3 Post 3 (Makoon’s Media Group)

As soon as you enter the Makoons Media Group site, they assert that … “THE MAKOONS MEDIA GROUP CREATES DIGITAL PROJECTS THAT MAKES SPACE FOR INDIGENOUS VOICES TO DISRUPT, INSPIRE & TRANSFORM THE WORLD AROUND US.”
The organization is both a content producer as well as a service provider for Indigenous communities. There goal is to create a digital story platform-space that gives voice for new expressions that expose settler culture and the decolonization practice.

As part of their work, they have constructed the portal Indian and Cowboy, which is a website that hosts numerous podcasts and resources for aspiring Indigenous media producers. The site encourages submissions or pitches from members. Below are direct links for some of the featured podcasts with brief explanations. However, I encourage you to check out all of the content. I have highlighted the three that I have been able to listen to.

Red Man Laughing

In this series, Host and comedian Ryan McMahon challenges the notion of reconciliation by arguing that before any reconciliation can happen decolonization must be the placed as the primary discourse for Indigenous communities.

Stories from the Land

This series focuses on the connections, intersections and inseparability between Indigenous cultures and the land they collaborate with. The series also explores the philosophical difference between settler resource exploitation and Indigenous holism.

Think Indigenous

In cooperation with the University of Saskatchewan, Indian and Cowboy have created this mini series for teacher education programs and practicing educators. The series explores the possibilities of Indigenous focused education efforts. The series features educators explaining their experience working with Indigenous youth and explores what they believe to be best practice.

Module 2 – Post 1 (Code Switch)

Code Switch is an NPR podcast, and blog that focuses on race and identity. Through the lens of journalists of colour, code switch aims to challenge the mainstream construction of identities by giving underrepresented voices a chance to be heard. Code Switch’s intention is to give people information about race and identity so that they can use it as a resource to for conversations that happen in everyday life. 

In the article “Native American Artists Reclaim Images That Represent Them”, author Tanvi Misra highlights the work of several Indigenous artists that use falsely constructed images, names or objects and repurpose them to create new meanings.

Entry 2: Sounding Out!

Sounding Out! is peer-reviewed weekly podcast/publication that unites sound artists, scholars and professionals all with the aim of investigating how sound effects us politically, culturally, and emotionally. In addition to their regular contributors, Sounding Out also curates other peoples work and allows outside contributions from interested researchers, artists and readers.

What I like about this project is that they are providing a platform for contributors to present work that otherwise do not have access to  academic communities.

Essentially, Sounding Out can be considered a searchable portal for a very underrepresented sonic community.

Module 4.3 Jo-anne Chrona CBC Podcast

So this podcast was recommended to me by the principal at one of my schools. So much of conversations at schools these days are focused on the new emphasis in the curriculum document on Indigineity. She felt that what Jo-anne Chrona had to say during this podcast was particularly worth listening to. Hint: her part of the podcast doesn’t start until just after the 26 min mark.
