This blog post briefly outlines various ways, tools and methods of creating a makerspace with an Indigenous focus. When designing these spaces, there has to be a concern with appropriation versus appreciation. While this post doesn’t explicitly speak to this, I think the questioning and guidance around making partnerships imply it.
Hi Kyle,
Thank you so much for providing such a rich set of resources on Makerspaces. Has the Summer Intensive vibe worn off or have you been able to bring the maker mentality into your classroom this semester?
I’ve been fortunate to have allied with the Indigenous Department this semester for many traditional craft and art. We have made wreaths, sprays, dreamcatchers and centrepieces in addition to witnessing smoked elk and salmon on traditional cedar boards.
Saying goodbye to this group of students will be particularly emotion because of the bonding we have had over Indigenous craft making.
