Navigating Gendered and Racialized Encounters in STEM and its Effects on Women of Colour Mental Health and Career Development<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This virtual presentation by Dr. Kerrie Wilkins-Yel, Ph.D. is being hosted by the UBC Counselling Psychology program.<\/p>\n

Women of color remain significantly underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In fact, women of color comprised only 8% of all science and engineering doctoral degrees awarded in 2016 (NSF, 2019). This continued underrepresentation has largely been attributed to working in STEM environments rife with systemic injustices (e.g., gendered racism). This presentation will center the voices of graduate women of color in STEM \u2013 women who identify as Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, and Multiracial \u2013 and shed light on the psychological implications of navigating marginalizing STEM environments. It will also discuss: 1) the results of the newly developed STEM-Gendered Racial Microaggressions Scale, a tool to assess the frequency and toll of racialized and gendered encounters in STEM; and 2) offer actionable steps faculty can implement to address marginalization in STEM and in turn support students\u2019 mental health and career development.<\/p>\n
