These notes will have a different feel, as we&#8217;re not solving an algorithmic problem but performing analysis on algorithms (or, in some cases, performing bits and pieces of that analysis).<\/p>\n<p>A few notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here are <strong>today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/cpsc320\/files\/2016\/09\/2016-09-19-asymptotic-analysis-notes.pdf\">notes on asymptotic analysis<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Here is a <strong>handout describing <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/cpsc320\/files\/2016\/09\/2016-09-19-little-o-and-omega-handout.pdf\">little-o and little-\u03c9 notation<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read Section 3.1<\/strong> of the textbook introducing graphs. (But, <strong>no pre-class quiz for Wednesday<\/strong>.)<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>add\/drop deadline is Tue 20 Jan<\/strong>. (We&#8217;d love to have you stay, but if you intend to drop, don&#8217;t miss the deadline!)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fill out the <a href=\"https:\/\/survey.ubc.ca\/s\/2016W1_cpsc320_presurvey\/\">optional start-of-term survey<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(by the add\/drop deadline tomorrow!) to help me learn a bit more about you and help the department learn about our courses. It\u2019s worth 2 bonus points!<\/li>\n<li>Today&#8217;s pre-class quiz went OK with some hiccoughs:\n<ul>\n<li>Functions like lg n and n lg n\u00a0<strong>are<\/strong> within the class of &#8220;polynomial&#8221; functions as far as we&#8217;re concerned (because they&#8217;re upper-bounded by a polynomial).<\/li>\n<li>Linear functions (like the simplest one: n) are\u00a0definitely in the class &#8220;polynomial&#8221;!<\/li>\n<li>If you thought it takes O(5^n) time to investigate all subsets of size 5 of a set of size n, be sure to\u00a0<strong>read the chapter<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today we&#8217;ll review and play with asymptotic analysis.
