It turns out, surprisingly, that we can also make a deterministic linear-time selection algorithm. If we get time, we may work through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ugrad.cs.ubc.ca\/~cs320\/misc\/Deterministic-Select-in-O-of-n.html\">code for linear-time DeterministicSelect<\/a> in class. (Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ugrad.cs.ubc.ca\/~cs320\/misc\/Deterministic-Select-in-O-of-n.ipynb\">Jupyter Notebook for that code<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>Before class next time, <strong>read Section 6.1<\/strong> and complete the <strong>pre-reading quiz due Tue at 10PM<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>There is a <strong>tutorial quiz this week <\/strong>(the week after mid-term break).<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t forget to <strong>read sections 5.3 and 5.4\u00a0plus\u00a0the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Master_theorem\">Master Theorem<\/a>\u00a0entry on Wikipedia.<\/strong> They&#8217;re not on the pre-class quiz, but they\u00a0<strong>are<\/strong> tremendously important (and easy for us to assess!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ll continue with our notes on divide-and-conquer\u00a0(maybe even conquer them!) and perhaps do some live coding.
