However, poorly designed systems are common, and can lead to negative outcomes such as frustration, lost time, and errors. The role of design is crucial for crafting appropriate systems that truly meet people\u2019s needs, abilities, and expectations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CPSC 544 covers the theories and concepts important for all professionals and researchers that design interactive technology for human use. This course will build common ground across students from a range of backgrounds, so they will have a shared vocabulary and methods to bring into other components of the Designing for People (DFP) program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Designing for People means designing for human experience and abilities, which requires in-depth engagement of people throughout the design process in order to develop interactive technologies that fit human needs and capabilities. The the course adopts teaches an iterative process called <em>design thinking<\/em>, which draws heavily on human computer interaction (HCI) methods, and employs a team-based project.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><b>Learning Outcomes<\/b><\/span><br \/>\nUpon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:<br \/>\n<!--\n<span>Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate the ability to:<\/span>\n\n\n<ul>\n \t\n\n<li><span>Us<span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><\/span>e<span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_end\"><\/span>, explain, and gain experience in human-centered design and the design thinking process, including methods for understanding people, exploring the problem area in-depth, identifying the right problem, ideating potential solutions, creating prototypes, and evaluating the prototypes.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>Identify and use appropriate data gathering\/design methods when working through understanding users\u2019 needs in different stages of the design process.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>Identify different frameworks and approaches to design; e.g. human-centered design vs. user centered design.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>Describe the central HCI techniques, frameworks or processes, in the context of their purpose: e.g., in providing structure for understanding tasks, identifying interaction problems, design alternatives, and next-step process choices.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>Collect and analyze information about specific group of people to appropriately define their activities, experiences, and needs: e.g., design and run a small field study and a small experiment.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>Understand the relevance of mental models of human users (such as cognitive resources, sensory processing) to usability problems in design.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>Have experience with tools and methods for interface prototyping and construct design solutions focused on accounting for human abilities\/limitations.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>Be familiar with research papers in HCI and be able to effectively identify, apply, and propose appropriate design methods and data collection\/analysis techniques when investigating a potential research problem.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n \t\n\n<li><span>Be familiar with other newer approaches to design in HCI when designing futuristic computational technologies; e.g. critical design, design fiction, and speculative design.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n--><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<ol>\n<li>Gain experience in human-centered design and the design thinking process, including methods for understanding people, exploring the problem area in-depth, identifying the right problem, ideating potential solutions, and creating and evaluating prototypes.<\/li>\n<li>Identify and use appropriate data gathering\/design methods when assessing user needs in different stages of the design process.<\/li>\n<li>Become familiar with different frameworks and approaches to design.<\/li>\n<li>Describe HCI techniques, frameworks or processes in the context of their purpose, e.g.,providing structure for understanding tasks, identifying interaction problems, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Collect and analyze information about a specific group of people to appropriately define their activities, experiences, and needs.<\/li>\n<li>Understand the relevance of mental models to usability problems in design.<\/li>\n<li>Gain experience with tools and methods for interface prototyping and in constructing design solutions focused on accounting for human abilities.<\/li>\n<li>Engage with research papers to effectively identify, apply, and propose appropriate design methods and data collection\/analysis techniques when investigating a potential research problem.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><b><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Audience, Prerequisites and Eligibility<\/span><br \/>\n<\/b>CPSC 544 is the first core course of the Designing for People (DFP) graduate training program\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/dfp.ubc.ca\">http:\/\/dfp.ubc.ca<\/a>). Non-DFP graduate students who are curious about how to design effective interactive systems may be admitted with permission of the instructor, with priority given to those in a research-based degree program.
