Malus fucas, or Pacific Crabapple is a member of the Rosaceae family and is the only native apple tree found in the province of British Columbia. This species  is often found on stream banks and is tolerant of brackish water of estuaries and sea shores (Pojar and Mackinon, 1994).

This deciduous tree species is characterized by its white-pink apple blossoms in the spring and its small yellow-red fruits (Pojar and Mackinon, 1994). These fruits are edible, beginning very tart, sweetening and fermenting on the branch into the fall.

This tree and its fruits have been used traditionally by Wuikinuxv people, among other coastal First Nations as a food source, medicine and as material for fuel (Compton, 1993).

They like to be harvested!
