About the Project

In the spring of 2017, I worked as a research technician for a grizzly and black bear monitoring project on the central coast in Wuikinuxv territory. A friend of mine, who lives in Wuikinuxv and works for the Coastal Guardian Watchman program, has lamented the state of the crabapple trees on the coast and up Wuikinuxv Lake. He told me that because they are not being harvested with the same frequency as they used to, they are not benefiting from their regular upkeep and are overgrown and producing poorly.

My goal for this project is to create a field map of potential pacific crabapple sites in Wuikinuxv territory in order to maintain them increasing their production for harvest in the fall. The final map will coincide with our bear monitoring areas in order to efficiently conduct both bear monitoring and crabapple upkeep over the course of the field season, so I will include buffered bear monitoring sites in the analysis.
