Watch The Romantics?

Published by under Movies

The Good: The supporting cast! Malin Akerman and Adam Brody are pretty hilarious. Dianna Agron is adorable as Anna Paquin’s little sister and their sisterly chemistry is actually quite believable. Candice Bergen as Anna Paquin and Dianna Agron’s overbearing mom was perfect. The chemistry between the supporting cast actually made this film quite bearable. It distracted me from how much I didn’t really like Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, or Anna Paquin.

The Bad: The use of indie music. Okay, we get it. It’s an indie flick and you’re trying to use indie music to make it seem cool and hipster. It’s fucking lame. It kinda seemed like it was trying too hard to be 500 Days of Summer and it just wasn’t even close.

The Ugly: Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, and Anna Paquin. The movie is supposed to be centered around the love triangle between these three, but somehow it also manages to make me hate them. Josh Duhamel is not believable as a college literature graduate who can quote Shelley and while it’s clear that he still loves Katie Holmes’ character continues to stay with Anna Paquin even though the chemistry is clearly lacking. Katie Holmes just can’t seem to get out of that “girl next door” character. Whether people liked or hated you as Joey Potter, you’ve got to move on, girl! Take a different role and stop playing these characters that allow you to shoot puppy dog eyes at the camera in an attempt to make the audience feel pity for you. It’s not working for you anymore! Anna Paquin, who I love in True Blood, was just not likeable at ALL in this movie. Maybe it was how her character was written. I can probably see that. But as a supposed lead, she didn’t get enough screen time. Had the audience gotten to know her better we may have understood why Josh Duhamel was constantly at odds with trying to pick between her and Katie Holmes. He states that it’s because of her practicality, but if we don’t see that translated in her actions, then we don’t really believe it.

Overall, I didn’t have great expectations for the film. It was just something at the video store that I thought I would try. I expected to like Agron, Akerman and Brody and to hate Duhamel and Holmes so I guess my expectations were on the money.

Here’s hoping someone makes a romantic comedy that doesn’t suck extremely soon!

Vonnegut is the Man

Published by under Art,Life

“The arts are not a way of making a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”

Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and Travis Barker Coming to Vancouver

Published by under Music,Vancouver

The only way this line up could be better is if Drake was tagging along with these cats. Alas, Vancouver, we’ll have to make do with hip hop’s biggest names and quite possibly one of the best and creative drummers of our generation.

Vancouver is the last date on Lil Wayne’s “I Am Music” tour and the show will obvz be at Rogers Arena. Last time, Lil Wayne couldn’t make it to the show in Van due to… issues… at the border. BUT third time’s a charm and hopefully customs will let him through this time.

Buy your tickets on February 4, 2011. Should be a great time. It’s BYOW.

Off the Map: A Change of Heart

Published by under TV

During the first two episodes, I slammed Off the Map and Shonda Rhimes for using Grey’s Anatomy‘s successful characters, re-writing them, placing them in a Third World country and calling it a different show. After watching tonight’s episode, however, I take back what I said. IN FACT, I may be inclined to opine that Shonda Rhimes purposely made her characters seem like Grey’s characters in order to trick and maybe even make fun of herself and us. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it and this idea never even came across her mind. But let’s analyze, shall we?
