Watch Tron: Legacy?
Trying a little too hard there, Disney? Tron: Legacy was kind of a disappointment. I guess I was expecting too much, but I came out of the theater a little upset that I had paid $19 to watch it in IMAX.
Props: I WILL say that the special effects were AMAZING. Gorgeous eye candy. Costumes, lighting, and sets were extremely pretty and visually astounding. The lightcycles, and lightjets were all awesome and it makes you think about how much work went into the visual aspect of the movie. It makes you admire all the people it took to create that digital world. Kudos to them because it turned out fantastic.
Mad, mad, mad hate: Yes, the visual effects were amazing, but did you HAVE to sacrifice the story and the character development? This movie had potential but because the story was horrible, I felt cheated. Just because you have dazzling production design and awesome visuals, doesn’t mean you can just expect the audience to come out of the theatre loving the movie. Yes, there will be some that say this is a great movie, but the people that go into it expecting a great storyline and great characters are going to be sorely disappointed. The plot is a mess, but if you enjoy just sitting back and giving your eyes a treat, then go see it.
Props: Olivia Wilde and Michael Sheen. Olivia Wilde’s character is the only character that I thought underwent a change in the movie and developed. Although I was unsure how she went from program to … how she ended up … (don’t want to spoil anything here), I feel like she stole the show. I also wanted to see more of Michael Sheen. As the campy, over-the-top Zeus/Castor, he actually brought his character to life and infused enough crazy into him to make him likeable and entertaining.
Hate: Cheesy, Disney dialogue. Nuff said. Too much talk about a “digital frontier” that’s already taking place. We’re there, Tron. You don’t have to keep smacking us in the face about it.
In short, go watch this movie if you want two hours of great glitter. It’s just a classic example of how Hollywood and audiences seem to be preferring style over substance. Don’t tell me that most movies can’t pull off dazzles and a good storyline. Look at The Dark Knight and Inception. The most disappointing part of this movie is that it could have been SO good had the writers tidied up the plot. Alas, Tron is the pretty dumb blonde of movies this December. I wish I could report better news about it.
