So, we decided to create our own guideline to use to evaluate the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coralrestoration.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coral Restoration Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and determine if it is a success.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>We choose some operational guidelines:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Does the organization monitor its projects? \u00a0 &#8211;&gt;\u00a0 \u00a0<span style=\"color: red;\">YES<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Does the organization preform regular maintenance on its projects?\u00a0&#8211;&gt; \u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: red;\">YES<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Does the organization set goals for itself and the work towards fulfilling them? \u00a0\u00a0&#8211;&gt; \u00a0<span style=\"color: red;\">YES<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Does the organization have the compliance of the locals \u00a0\u00a0&#8211;&gt; \u00a0<span style=\"color: red;\">YES<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Then we looked at the scientific side of things to see how the reef itself is affected<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the survival rate of the transplanted corals high? \u00a0\u00a0&#8211;&gt; \u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: red;\">YES<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Is the growth rate of the transplanted corals high? \u00a0&#8211;&gt; \u00a0<span style=\"color: red;\">YES<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Have the corals reproduced (spawned) since they were planted? \u00a0&#8211;&gt; \u00a0<span style=\"color: red;\">YES<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: red;\">Bases on out criteria we can say that the work the Coral Restoration Foundation does is a success!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_76\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/uw.papoulas.com\/slideshow.php?cat_id=10&amp;imgID=312\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76\" class=\" wp-image-76 \" alt=\"Blue Parrot Fish, looking pleased. Photo credit: Ted Papoulas<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">We determined Success based on information obtained through interviews with individuals working on coral restoration in florida, data published in scientific journals, and information found on websites. Some of this information is provided below:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The three main <a title=\"goals of the CRF\" href=\"http:\/\/www.coralrestoration.org\/goalsstrategy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>goals<\/strong> of CRF<\/a> are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Education<\/li>\n<li>Action<\/li>\n<li>Results<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The CRF also sets internal goals for themselves in the number of corals they would like to plant in a week, a month, and even a year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_80\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/crfreturnofthereef\/files\/2013\/11\/diver.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80\" class=\"size-full wp-image-80\" alt=\"CRF diver monitoring coral nurseries. Photo credit: CRF<\/p><\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">CRF carries out both <strong>maintenance<\/strong> and <strong>monitoring<\/strong> for a minimum of 2 years\u00a0they have found a high degree of <strong>compliance<\/strong> among locals, and have set goals for planting coral numbers which they have far exceeded. \u00a0They also have education and outreach programs and partnerships with other agencies such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">NOAA<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.org\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Nature Conservancy<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coral restoration is a pretty new idea, and because of that people aren&#8217;t completely sure how to tell if it is successful.
