The Canucks brand has spread from the team and its members, to sports memorabilia, any item that can be customized, and even facilities. Rogers Arena is almost synonymous with the Vancouver Canucks, and even if Vancouverites have never been to or follow hockey games, they will connect Rogers with their local hockey team.

Another less well-known facility, is Burnaby 8 Rinks. As the name implies, there are 8 NHL sized rinks (7 ice, 1 soccer) in one big facility, and

up to around 2007, the Vancouver Canucks practiced there, resulting in numerous signs outside and within the facility heralding “Home of the Canucks.” This attracted many visitors and fans to 8 Rinks just to catch a glimpse of their favourite hockey stars, and while the fans were there, they would sign up for hockey classes, or attend public skating sessions. As a result, 8 Rinks received a lot of revenue, publicity and attention for being associated with this NHL hockey team, so if someone wanted to go skating, the choice would easily include 8 Rinks in the midst.

An old shot of the facility

This unique co-branding benefit continued long after the Canucks moved base to UBC. There are still many visitors to the facility who hope to catch the team during practice, and retain the 8 Rinks name in their memory bank when it comes to the Canucks. 8 Rinks’ corporate event availabilities, range of hockey/skating programs, Adult Safe Hockey League, among others, have all benefited from this “free marketing” just by being linked to the Canucks. Participants of the programs feel special that they share the same facility with NHL stars, which ensures that picking this ice rink is a qualified, high valued choice.

I wanted to add on Gavin Chenkis’ thoughts regarding the culture and brand that the Vancouver Canucks have created, both in the community and in the ice sports industry.
