Hi all,
This week I discuss some key themes in Pedro Paramo – mainly the idea of ‘bad blood’, how religious doctrine (catholic in this case) is irreconcilable with giving into earthly pressures, and hegemony and monopolization.
Question: Is Pedro to blame for the story’s ensuing consequences? Do you think this is a case of intergenerational trauma? Why or why not? Give some examples of why you think what you do.
See you Thursday, – Curtis
I don’t think talking about “intergenerational trauma” is a stretch. Absolutely: among other things, this is a novel about the unfinished business left over by a previous generation. The trauma of injustice and the caudillo system was not resolved by the Revolution, which if anything simply left more threads and wounds that have yet to heal.
