My name is Curtis Fox and I’m a fourth year student in the process of completing a combined honours degree in computer science and statistics. I was born in and currently live in the Vancouver area. In addition to my computer science and statistics courses, I have also taken many math courses, as well as classes in some other fields. Courses I have particularly enjoyed since I came to UBC were CPSC 421 – Theory of Computing and CPSC 302 – Numerical Computation for Algebraic Problems. I’m presently taking STAT 460 – Statistical Inference, which has been very interesting so far. I have been a TA for multiple courses in statistics and computer science since I started at UBC, as I really enjoy teaching and helping other people learn. I would like to attend graduate school after I complete my undergraduate degree, and complete both a master’s and a doctorate degree. My specific research interests include numerical linear algebra, algorithms, and statistical inference. I aspire to become professor and work in research and academia, but I am open to the idea of working in industry as well. I believe that making scientific progress is extremely important, which is why I am interested in taking this route. As well, I think it’s very important to never stop learning, which is another reason to go down a more academic path. I originally wanted to go to medical school and become a doctor, but after my first year of university, I changed my mind and decided that I was more interested in computational or mathematical subjects. I want to take English 301 to help improve my professional writing skills, which would be important if I chose to work as an academic, since I would be writing and publishing papers, as well as often working with other professionals.
