Your student took the Comprehension of Written Grammar (CWG) test<\/strong> and now you\u2019ve received the test results by email. We will walk you through interpreting those results and writing learning objectives for the individual student or your whole class.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is an example of a student report as it looks when received by email. This sample student report will be used throughout the step-by-step instructions:\u00a0CWG Sample Report<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Grammatical Structures in the Test<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Each report is organized in three main sections:<\/p>\n

Vocabulary Check (14 items)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Step 1. Receive CWG Test Report by Email<\/h2>\n

Your student\u2019s Comprehension of Written Grammar Test report might look like this: CWG Sample Report<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The questions they answered incorrectly will show <\/span>Incorrect<\/span>. The information displayed in the righthand column contains feedback on how to teach the grammatical structure and what Vocabulary Check Words were used in that test question.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 2. Review errors, look for patterns<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If test takers have difficulty with specific grammatical structures, this should show up as a pattern in the test report. Each structure has 2 related test items (list of grammatical structures<\/a>). If you see both test items in error, this flags the structure as a possible learning target.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the following examples, we explore some <\/span>patterns<\/b> you can look for in your student\u2019s results. <\/span><\/p>\n

Step 3. Check if unfamiliar vocabulary could be cause of item errors<\/strong><\/h2>\n

An incorrect response on the test <\/span>may not<\/span> mean that the student does not understand the grammatical structure in the test question. There are several reasons why they might answer a question incorrectly:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. They have difficulty with the grammatical structure<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. They have difficulty with the vocabulary in the sentence<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. They are distracted and are not focused on the test<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. They have difficulty understanding the picture<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. They chose the wrong picture by mistake<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If you see incorrect responses, first you should check if the student is familiar with the vocabulary word.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Step 4. Identify structures to target<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Look at the Vocabulary Check words and the 2 main components of the test: Inflection\/Semantics and Syntax.<\/span><\/p>\n
