We will consider the ways a global framework informs classroom practice, planning, assignments and assessment. We will make connections between classroom and communities, and amongst \u2018the local\u2019, \u2018the global\u2019 and that which is in between. Within these discussions, we will interrogate the very notion of the local, and instead assert cultural, environmental, philosophical, economic and political connectedness. Further, we will engage some of ethical questions associated with exploring global issues within an educational context. In particular, how do we interrogate the way in which place and context inform our own understandings and perceptions of the Other. Finally, we will look at the ways in which a global framework can\/ought to develop active citizens, and interrogate the different constructions of citizenship in a variety of settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The objectives of this course are to help us to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Develop an understanding of the main foci of global education<\/li>\n<li>Develop an understanding of the ways in which global education can be incorporated into the curriculum<\/li>\n<li>Develop lesson plans and classroom practices in your subject area that reflect a global framework<\/li>\n<li>Think critically about the implementation of global issues and concerns<\/li>\n<li>Explore the spaces and ethical concerns related to activist centered curricula<\/li>\n<li>Introduce\/assess some of the agencies, resources and interest groups available to teachers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Course Structure &amp; Expectations<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course runs from January &#8211; April, 2016 and takes place online and face-to-face at BHER Learning Center, Dadaab.<\/p>\n<p>The course will be done in two parts: (i) a combination of online learning activities and (ii) face to face lectures, group and individual activities, and discussion of assigned readings. Students will be asked to do their readings and do the assigned activities<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Readings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The course materials are posted on this course blog. Please do the readings and participate in the identified learning activities for each class. If you have any difficulties do not hesitate to contact your instructors.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that the recommended readings in the syllabus are not \u201ca must do\u201d, they are just additional resources you can consult at your own time or in future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Course Introduction and Expectations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Welcome to the <em>EDUC 275 Global Education<\/em> course. This hybrid (half online, half face-to-face) course on Global Education will help you learn and think critically about integrating global perspectives into your teaching. Topics will be examined using selected course readings, class lectures and discussions as well as selected videos (<strong><em>whenever possible<\/em><\/strong><u>)<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>In order to be successful in this course, students are expected to read and complete the assigned tasks for each class as indicated in the course outline.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that a number of activities have been developed to assist you engage with the course material. Of the different activities that you will do, each week you will be required to <strong>submit one assignment<\/strong> via the course blog for grading. The assignment that you will submit is in <strong>asterisk i.e. starred (***)<\/strong>.
