It became slick and firm. This young creative began to explore a sustainable way to make a surfboard using sheep wool.

Your typical surfboard is made from fiberglass, a not-so friendly to the environment material as it takes a lot of energy to produce, tricky to recycle, and it does not break down well at its end of life. Whereas wool is abundantly available, largely sustainable, requires a moderate amount of energy to produce and biodegrades back into the environment at the end of its lifecycle. Barron and his business partner predict that wool-based materials will replace fibreglass entirely, from furniture to aircrafts.

It is great to see businesses emerging from sustainable alternatives. We are at a point where business cannot eliminate impacts on the environment, however it can innovate and provide sustainable options. In other words, it would be irrational for Barron to have suggested that no one should make surfboards because the fibreglass is harmful on the environment. Rather, he came up with a healthy alternative. I am optimist and a large scale thinker, so I can’t help but daydream about a surf world that only uses wool-based surfboards. Perhaps we will see a society where the sustainable options overpower the traditional ones in the marketplace, making harmful products obsolete.

On the contrary, I worry that this wool-based alternative will create a wicked problem in that sheep will grow to be treated unfairly, as they would be mass produced in order to keep up with the demand that Barron and his business partner predict.

Paul Barron, a surfer from New Zealand, came across a revolutionizing shift in surfboard material when he spilt resin on…

[1

post-25","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
