If a mining company tries to mine in or near  the First Nations territory, there is  always a danger that the First Nation will try to sabotage it. This is happening to Taseko Mines Ltd. which is planning to mine copper and gold at Fish Lake. Tsilhqot is set to declare a vast chunk of Chilcotin as a tribal park, covering the company’s Fish Lake site.  If the native tribe wins the claim, the mining company will not be able to carry out its $1.1 billion project because in a tribal park, large-scale industrial mining and clear-cut logging would not be allowed.

The company claims they have modified their initial plan which will destroy Fish Lake. However, a review of the company’s second plan has revealed that the mining will damage a 12-square-kilometer tailings pond and contaminate nearby Fish Lake and the upper Fish Creek system.

I support the natives’ effort to protect the environment and their culture. There is no end to take advantage of nature and I am glad someone is trying to stop those big corporations who think money is everything.
