Today I did another read aloud with the book, ‘What Does Peace Feel Like?’, in connection with Remembrance Day. The students really enjoyed this book because it was all asking questions about the five senses and then it was answered and written by children close in age to them. The follow up activity was a Peace Quilt, where each student would get a square with the beginning of a sentence on it and they would have to finish it. I encouraged the students to think very carefully about this and make it personal. I gave them a practice sheet with the sentence on it and then they were to write it on there and get it checked for spelling before they did their good copy. I asked the to also draw a picture to go along with it. I then took all the squares home and knit them together to create a large quilt that is being displayed in the school and the community centre for Remembrance Day. Again with this art project I noticed that the students who normally excel academically struggled. I also saw that it was hard for students to think personally.
