“If the United Nations was fully funded why would we need the Arc or social enterprise?”

Posted by in Uncategorized

Even in an ideal world where the UN was fully funded and more than sufficient amounts of aid could be given to every single country in need, the existence of social enterprise would nevertheless be essential to build a sustainable future for generations to come. An organization as large as the UN, which aims to take into account the values and needs of 193 member countries, is bound to face inefficiencies in its chain of operation due the sheer scope of its size as well as the various tasks it…read more

RE: John Jantsch, “5 Questions You Should Ask Every Customer” – Firms aren’t mind readers.

Posted by in Uncategorized

In his business blog, John Jantsch highlights 5 keys questions which firms should pose to its customers. They are as follows:On first impression, I couldn’t help but think… Wow, what a bunch of generic questions. Without giving it any thought, I couldn’t honestly understand why it’d be so beneficial to ask customers such simple questions because as a firm, shouldn’t they know those questions better than anyone? Only after I had finished reading the blog was I able to understand the importance of switching roles in this scenario, an aspect…read more

Education: A luxury good.

Posted by in Uncategorized

Most recently, the University of British Columbia announced its plan for a 10% international tuition increase for 2015. Being an international student myself, this news could not have come as a bigger shock. Since the tuition paid by international students is already more than triple the tuition domestic students pay,  it seemed rather ridiculous when UBC proposed such plans without giving students a single insight into how the money generated from the increased tuition would be used. As pessimistic and sad at this may sound, I have come to see…read more

Zappos: The success story of a driven workforce.

Posted by in Uncategorized

A leading example in its field, Zappos has become one of the most popular online shoe stores in North America to date. Infamous for its 365 days return policy and no time limit on customer calls, Zappos has secured itself the highest position in the ladder of the shoe industry. So how exactly is it possible that all Zappos’ customer service employees are able to handle hours of listening to unhappy customers every day of every week, and more importantly, how are they motivated to keep doing so? A simple…read more

Market Research: Let’s keep in mind, we are not all robots here.

Posted by in Uncategorized

When I hear “Market Research” there is a part of me that cannot help but associate these words with data, data— and nothing but data. As the word research already implies, market research has always seemed like a big research project to me: how many people with blonde hair buy this product, how many people in their early 20’s show interest in this product, or how many percentage of males or females demand this product? Categorization after categorization, market research has exhausted itself through analyzing past data (and here, let…read more

Bench: A Disruptive Innovator

Posted by in Uncategorized

In today’s society, where competition is at its absolute peak, we, business school students, thirsty and eager for success, could not be in more doubt to reach the ultimate goal of establishing our own company one day. In a world where there are a handful of powerful companies which dominate one industry or market, and in an environment where firms have secured a position high up in the ladder in consumers’ mind for different goods and services, the light at the end of the tunnel looks bleak and dim for…read more

Kinder Morgan Pipeline: No bright future ahead.

Posted by in COMM 101

When Kinder Morgan, the third largest energy company in North America, announced its plans to renew its bitumen pipelines running from Edmonton to Burnaby in B.C., they were faced with much opposition from several parties of which the most prominent was the First Nations. The question which arises as a result of this situation is: how will these oppositions caused by macroeconomic factors affect the company’s activities in the long run? Using the tool of a PESTLE analysis, political, social and economic factors can be taken into account to examine…read more

RE: Jodie Gong, “Life of babies in danger?!” – A Case of Government Intervention

Posted by in COMM 101

Immediately after reading Jodie’s blog on the “Life of babies in danger?!”, the first question which circled my mind was: Can all the blame be placed on the companies? In her blog, Jodie strongly expresses both her concern and anger towards several companies who have been neglecting the quality of their product (in this case, milk powder) in order to maximize profits. Indeed, it is alarming to think that money has become more important than the health of infant babies and their growth, and I cannot agree more with Jodie…read more

RE: HsiuCheng, “iPhone6 is coming up!” – Too much love for IPHONE6

Posted by in COMM 101

In her blog, HsiuCheng carelessly boasts about the newly launched iPhone 6 and optimistically predicts a healthy future for it in the highly competitive smartphone market. Boy, was she wrong. To begin with, her statement that both the camera and screen resolution improved on the iPhone 6 is false when it is put in relative terms. Due to the fact that the smartphone industry is such a competitive one, it no longer makes sense for firms to assert that there is a new & improved camera, or a crisper screen…read more

What is Business Ethics?

Posted by in COMM 101

Ethics can be defined as: a system of moral principles or rules of behavior. Now, when we apply this definition directly to a business, ethics can simply mean the moral principles which a firm or more specifically, the person in charge (such as the CEO) follows when running their business. However, this definition as a whole is flawed since there is no single list of moral principles which firms must obey or follow. Moreover, what does it mean to moral? Is there one set of guidelines which informs us…read more
