My fifth linking assignment is from Lubna Yassin’s post on speculative futures.
I appreciated Lubna’s response to her prompt through the use of story telling while also including some imagery. Lubna’s storytelling was incredibly well done in its descriptions. I also appreciated the images she thoughtfully included to aid in better understanding the scenario that was created, while not include too many images to allow readers to create some of their own interpretations.
Within my own speculative futures scenario, I utilized a more visual concept by including various graphic; pictures with some text. My choice did not allow room in which my readers could create their own visions for my futuristic prompt. Lubna’s description privileged the audience to create their own ideas within the constraints of the scenario through her use of text and some visuals. As a reader I appreciated this choice.
Additionally, Lubna’s reflection aided in better understanding her post as she shared her background in architecture and design. This is evident in her descriptions within the text. Lubna’s prompt asked her to describe: a piece of clothing found a generation into a future in which society as we know it has come apart… addressing issues related to citizenship and elicit feelings of excitement.
In her description “of democratic socialism has taken over and class privilege has ceased” and an “obsolete cloth” is found lends itself to the circular story in which Lubna had in mind to create. Human’s will often find a way to stand out and be distinctive as described by Dordi (2018). The reminds me of students who are required to wear a uniform in school, yet, wear bright green laces on their shoes or dye their hair pink; they always found a way to stand out and show their personality (no matter how small). I don’t think this concept will change in 20 years from now or ever 1000 years (if we’re still around). I appreciated the way in which Lubna captured this.
Overall, I appreciated the way in which Lubna choose to design her post and her narrative and I really enjoyed reading it.
