{"id":57,"date":"2015-10-15T09:02:09","date_gmt":"2015-10-15T16:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/dchen\/?p=57"},"modified":"2019-05-11T09:36:13","modified_gmt":"2019-05-11T16:36:13","slug":"sotl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/dchen\/blog\/sotl\/","title":{"rendered":"SoTL: Through the Learner&#8217;s Lens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During last week\u2019s GCP session, we explored scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) and considered the various methods that we could employ to answer our own questions re: our teaching practice and effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>With goals to enhance and augment learner\u2019s processes, SoTL is a useful <em>tool<\/em> to inform us about the <span style=\"color: #128dba;\"><strong>overall alignment between our intention, belief and action<\/strong>.<\/span> Its dissemination is a <em>by-product<\/em> of our continual efforts to improve our discipline-specific pedagogical approach \u2013 its core value lies within the <em>process<\/em> of these systematic investigations (e.g., self-reflection to identify specific issues of teaching and\/or learning, critical appraisal of said issues using appropriate methodology and analysis, and application of results to practice).<\/p>\n<p>To immediately apply what we\u2019ve just learnt, we were asked to identify areas we\u2019d like to learn about our current teaching practice and to develop a research question based on our personal reflection. I noticed that all of the questions that I had about my teaching practice were through <em>my<\/em> own lens as an instructor! I totally neglected to consider the other, and arguably more important, side of the \u201cteaching <em>and<\/em> learning\u201d equation \u2013 where was my <span style=\"color: #128dba;\"><strong>learner\u2019s lens<\/strong><\/span>?<\/p>\n<p>This exercise really illuminated my blind spots as a developing instructor \u2013 it is <em>not<\/em> about me! In order to truly assess my teaching effectiveness (i.e., alignment between my intention, belief and action), I\u2019ll have to actively involve my learners, seeing that they are the only credible source to comment\/provide feedback on the impact of my teaching!<\/p>\n<p>My key take-away from this session was: to consciously prioritize my learners\u2019 learning above my own eagerness to \u201cperfect\u201d my teaching practice \u2013 to actively use <em>their<\/em> lens to inform how I approach teaching to deepen <em>their<\/em> learning.
