Shared Assumptions and Values of Home (L2.1 Assignment 3)

It is interesting how so many of our classmates focused on core ideas of the “home”, yet still managed to touch upon a variety topics.

Zara‘s post had very similar messages as my own. For example, she says that “home is where your family is”, and that with a family, a home can be built anywhere. Zara also includes that she witnessed her house being on fire, and that she was worried that things that made her home “homey” would be lost. This was an interesting concept to me, because it is something I’ve pondered throughout my whole life (with changing answers as I’ve aged). When I was young, my number one answer was my Dolly. As I got older, it switched to items like my diary or “special box” where I kept things that were important to me. Today, assuming that my family and pets were out safely, I would grab my Dolly (as she represents my childhood) and scrapbooks/photo albums (because they contain memories that are not digitally accessible). Thinking of situations like this show me where my priorities lie.

Cat‘s blog was particularly interesting. She left “home” behind in attempt to also abandon the memories that accompanied it. Her story did not say the message outright (something that I particularly enjoy), but instead she beat around the bush and allowed tension to build. I found her blog post particularly touching.

Some common words that come up in my classmates blog that I also associate with “home” include:

Family
Loved ones
Memories
Identity
Story
Tradition
