I examine the world around me

Nothing but a character in a never-ending story,

Me

I am oh so powerful and powerless all at once

As i look I see

The faces of beautiful people

Of ugly people

The faces of those who I have met

And of those I have not

Funny how we find ourselves in familiar situations,

In an unfamiliar setting

As I see these beautiful faces and unforgiving smiles

And grand structures,

Contagious Creativity,

Cultural Mosaics,

Destroyed Nature,

Carelessness,

Ignorance,

Beauty,

I am torn.

Torn by comparing what might have been to what now is

Why does evil sometimes win?

Why don’t people let love fill their hearts?

Why do they let hatred divide us?

Us

Us is part you, part me

It takes two to tango

And part me is determined to try with all my heart to fill the world

With music,

Compassion,

Joy,

Realization,

Knowledge,

But I can not stand alone.

Part me needs part you to work

To work for justice and stop the corrupting power of division

We are one

A united people

And to realize that is to appreciate our differences

Celebrate each other’s victories

Mourn each other’s losses

Part  me cannot save part you

Part you cannot save part me

Us is what saves us

US is what saves the world in all it’s wonder

I created this piece about a few days ago while sitting in a large leather chair in the “Harry Potter room” of the Irving K Barber Learning Centre. There, I was supposed to be working on another assignment but my mind was unable to focus. As a result I looked around me and began to write about the wonderful and terrible encounters we experience every day, while acknowledging the beauty and the destruction of our physicals world. As I did so, I began to realize that our greatest threat is the division of ourselves. Poetry is a passion of mine and inspiration comes at very unexpected moments. I often incorporate the themes or lines of my poetry into my academic work. It is a tool which gets my point across to the reader as clear and pure in a most effective manner.
