Who I Am
My name is Deirdre Morrison. I am a first year arts student and will graduate in 2020. As of now, I am an undeclared major, but plan to major in political science while minoring in Indigenous studies. I hail from the greater Toronto area in Ontario and came to UBC in search of travel and academic opportunity. I speak English but am determined to become fluent in French as well. My interests include ballroom and latin dancing, discussing global politics, writing poetry, travelling and creating art. I also love listening to music, especially the beatles, the soundtrack to Les Miserables and Putomayo world playlists.
My goal career is to become a civil rights lawyer and work with Canadian Indigenous communities to ensure that they have adequate standards of living and opportunities that suit their needs. Some day I would also like to start a NGO with the intent of protecting sacred lands and precious resources from being destroyed by human activity.
In order to one day achieve these goals, I can rely on my compassion, dedication, and love of learning to engage with the proper networks that share this interest. I grew up in a community which did not have many Indigenous people. As a Métis person, I became angered that many of my peers did not seem to know or care about the poor treatment of Indigenous people in our own country, not to mention across the globe as well. As a result, I focused many of my school projects and presentations around the treatment of Indigenous peoples in Canada in an attempt to educate and ignite a spark of curiosity about the subject in my classmates. I think the fact that I am able to communicate effectively with others in an informative and passionate way would make me well suited for my dream career.
