Introduction

Hi,

My name is Dexter, my friends call me Dex or Dexy. I am taking this course because it is a mandatory requirement in STT 18.

As part of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, I have done some marketing for our events. I have used two forms of media to market the events: print media (flyers) and online media (Facebook). As a student and a consumer, I have definitely been affected by marketing. Everything that I currently own and use was somehow influenced by a particular company’s marketing strategy.

My favorite advertisement would be the “Sleep Country” ad that is shown on TV and on the radio. The reason why I like it so much is because its jingle is so catchy and fun to sing along to.

Finally, as a fun fact, I was born in Vancouver and our family moved to Hong Kong when I was 2. I was raised in Hong Kong and came to UBC for university.

COMM 299 has taught me many things. I feel that the most important thing I learned about myself was through the intensive questionnaire also known as StrengthsQuest.

Through strengthsquest, I realized that based on my personality, I have these follow 5 strengths:

Discipline
Focus
Futuristic
Restorative
Achiever

Post #11: Greatest lesson learned from someone else

Framed Framed Guidance - Inspirational Quote

I have read through many inspirational documents (posters, books, magazines etc.), one that struck me is the exact same poster that is hanging on my wall. It reads “Guidance, there are many who give advice, but few who offer guidance”. There are many people in my life that have offered numerous amounts of advice. Yet only a handful of people would offer guidance. One of these people would be my dad. The long lasted and ever-so cliche lesson of “practice makes perfect”

It was during the summer of 2010, my dad and I went on a golfing trip to Thailand. I must admit that I am in no way a good golfer. Apparently, my stance and my swing are very problematic. However, in order to force me to improve on my game, my dad shoved me in the deep end of the pool, and started me off playing 2 full 18 hole games on the first day. With every swing and stroke, my dad would comment and teach me to improve. He kept on telling me “keep practicing, and you’ll get it one day”. After many “swings-and-misses” and shots that flew all the way out of bounds, I persisted and did not give up.

I believe it was the 15th hole, and I was 30 yards away from the hole. I remembered what I did in the past, corrected my form and to my surprise. I had shot my first chip in. This was a great lesson learned from my dad, as he taught me to never give up on anything, and this could be the first time where I saw with my own eyes that “practice makes perfect”

Post #10: Challenges met during Case 3

When I first looked through the Case 3 Instruction sheet, I was rattled. I did not know what I was supposed to do and how I was supposed to tackle the case. However, after reading it several more times and actually paying attention reading the question and guidelines, it became very clear to me what I was supposed to write.

I found the most challenging part to be the Financial Investment analysis section. Not only was it difficult to find the information online, crunching numbers wasn’t an easy task either. I had to go on the Bell website and look through all the Supplemental Information to find the Operating Incomes. I had to go on the TELUS website to find its Operating Income. I had to go on Yahoo! Finance to find the varying stock prices. Although the process was tough, I believe that I bettered from this exercise.

As the famous Billy Ocean said “When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going”

Post #9: Business Plan 2 Presentation

After the writeup for the Business Plan 2 was over, the next thing to do would be to make the powerpoint presentation. I attended a Case Competition Club workshop where there were experienced speakers teaching the attendees how to make effective powerpoint presentations.

Keeping the knowledge in mind, I set out and started to make my own template on Microsoft Powerpoint. The following couple of pictures shows my entire process in creating the slides. I was on Skype with my friend and together, we critiqued the different color schemes and shapes and ended up with the final result.
