Hello everyone!

Welcome to my blog for ENG 301 99C. This is a third year course with a focus on technical writing. Section 99C is the distance learning (online) version of the course, and it is taught by Dr. Erika Paterson. ENG 301 aims to develop writing skills that are applicable to professional environments. Specifically, the course intends to hone the necessary communication skills to thrive in the workplace. This includes preparing abstracts, creating reports, dealing with work emails, and networking. This course also facilitates collaboration with peers through online discussion and peer review.

ENG 301 is divided into four units:

  • Principles, Practices and People in English 301
  • Designing a Report Proposal; Defining Terms with Audience in Mind
  • Designing a Report Outline & Draft; Building your Resume and Job Application skills
  • Drafting the Formal Report; Peer Review and Final Report; developing networking strategies

Throughout the course, practical assignments will assist in developing our technical writing skills. Some relevant and key assignments include the creation of a Web Folio and resume, as well as the design of a formal report.

As a student in this course, I hope to enhance my writing skills and communicate with better clarity and intention. I have spent most of my time on this earth in academia, with little professional work experience. In this way, I feel that a course like ENG 301 will better prepare me for the specific and distinct writing skills necessary for professional environments. I am also excited to meet and collaborate with my classmates. As a whole, I expect ENG 301 to be an asset for my future career as a software developer.

I hope we all have a great semester! ❄️
