Some possible negative impacts felt by students include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fear of rejection or punishment from teachers if students refuse to dissect.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/dissectionandalternatives\/files\/2012\/04\/089.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-80\" title=\"Frogs are our Friends!\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/dissectionandalternatives\/files\/2012\/04\/089-e1333398794588-300x255.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/dissectionandalternatives\/files\/2012\/04\/089-e1333398794588-300x255.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/dissectionandalternatives\/files\/2012\/04\/089-e1333398794588-1024x873.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/dissectionandalternatives\/files\/2012\/04\/089-e1333398794588.jpg 1827w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Fear of embarrassment\u00a0or social\u00a0stigmatization\u00a0from peers if student refuse to dissect.<\/li>\n<li>Becoming emotionally insensitive to the use of animals in science.<\/li>\n<li>Regarding animals as expendable tools. (Cunningham, 2000).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other problems with dissection:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Destructive nature of the procedure can damage tissues or organs meant to be studies in a dissection. (Balcombe, 2001)<\/li>\n<li>Animals bred and raised for the lab may not fully represent nature (Cunningham, 2000).<\/li>\n<li>Preservatives and harsh chemicals turn animals rubbery,\u00a0discolored, and foul smelling (Balcombe, 1997).<\/li>\n<li>Formaldehyde used as a preservative can cause irritation to the upper respiratory tract, nose, and skin (Balcombe, 2000).<\/li>\n<li>Student learning can be compromised by feelings of disgust or revulsion.<\/li>\n<li>Most undergraduate biology students will not go on to careers using practical dissection skills (Downie and Meadows, 1995).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students, as well as animals, can experience damaging emotional and cognitive effects when forced to perform dissections in schools.
